Interior design is the art of decorating the interior of the house to make it look like a home and feel comfortable like a home as opposed to having it scantily decorated and making it feel like a house. A home becomes a home when you add your personal touch to the home and make it yours. This may mean bringing in an interior designer to give the house that wow factor. It could be that you have the skill for interior design and you need some outside professional help.

Interior design is putting the cabinets in the right place, the kitchen island just at the right angle in the kitchen. It also involves coordinating the right wood colors of furniture pieces with the wall colors or wallpaper. It means blending the appliances with the kitchen appliances and placing the fireplace with the correct design in the right spot of the living room.

What Is an Interior Designer

A good definition for an interior designer is one who is trained to make the interior of our homes to appeal to our emotions and craft our spaces to tantalize our tastes. They have taken professional courses and technical classes to be trained in being able to dress the interior of our homes so they will shine. They are also trained in textiles, color, space planning, and so much more.

They are trained in 2D and 3D  computer aided design (CAD) and they are knowledgeable in building information modeling and they have to know about structural standards, health and safety issues, and building codes. They have to know so many things to be able to design the interior of a home. They were with contractors, engineers, architects, furniture designers, home builders, home owners, and painters. They also have to be able to organize and coordinate accurately, quickly and have immense people skills.

So what is being said here is that an interior designer cannot just walk off the street and design the interior of a home. They go through extensive training and they are filled with technical skills. They must know how to coordinate colors and perceive designs that will please the homeowners it is almost as if they have to be able to read the homeowner’s mind.

The interior design came into being in the early 20th century when the profession began to be recognized as a profession. It has evolved greatly since that time and it is not the same profession it was since it started. It has changed so much it is nothing like it was 100 years ago.

This company says that interior design is a relatively new profession even though it has been around for over 100 years. Anyway, the company says it is confusing to the public. NCIDQ defines the profession this way, “The Professional Interior Designer is qualified by education, experience, and examination to enhance the function and quality of interior spaces.”  There have to be practical as well as aesthetic features in any interior design it has to take into consideration not only the practical side of planning spatially where to place the cabinets, kitchen appliances. But the interior designer must coordinate the colors of the cabinets with the kitchen appliances and the tiles of the floor must complement the wallpaper or the wall colors.

A big part of interior designing is pleasing the tastes of the homeowner and no homeowner will be the same as everyone has their own personal tastes. Interior designing involves the design of the whole interior of the home bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, living room, den, basement. The whole house has to coordinate in color and furniture settings.

Think about the complexities of interior designing it also involves sometimes reconfiguring the whole interior of a home. An interior design does not always involve designing a home from scratch. But it could mean the interior design specialist has to redesign a house that already has a set interior design in place. It could mean that rooms have to be demolished and rooms expanded or whole new rooms have to be built.

It means that kitchens have to be demolished and re-spaced to meet the requirements of the homeowner. Actually an interior designer may have to expand the total square footage of the home. But this is not as simple as it sounds because the interior designer has to work with budget constraints and zoning requirements.

The designing team may begin to tear out a wall to make a room larger but they could run into electrical or structural issues. There could be water damage from pipes leaking or from a roof damaged that has an interior leak that cannot even be visible. There could be electrical issues or plumbing issues.

There have been cases where interior designers have found structural issues in which the foundation of the house could be cracked or compromised for other reasons. This puts the interior design into a whole other dimension because then the structure has to be repaired before the interior can even be changed.

This throws the interior design into a swirl because the budget may not have taken into account these types of emergencies. Then this will definitely cut into the interior designer’s budget and program. What does the interior designer do in this scenario? Where are the priorities? The interior designer has to either convince the homeowner to expand the budget or some interior design change will have to be canned because the money is not there.

Another issue is what if the structural, plumbing or electrical issue are so extensive that it takes the whole interior design budget to replace it? You see the interior designer has to be a negotiator as well as a designer and they absolutely must have excellent social skills.

Another aspect of interior design is a designer must be skilled at creating 3-D even 2-D interior sets that have to blend throughout the whole house. The designer must be able to conceptualize these spaces using the computer (CAD) program. Then these spatial concepts must be transferred into the physical world to become reality-based designs within the home. An interior designer must have a creative imagination and be a visionary.

Another aspect of interior design is a designer has to be a great program manager and coordinator. The designer must coordinate the teams that will be working on the interior design itself. The cabinet makers have to be brought in at a certain stage of the design, then the painters have to come in at another stage of the design. The floor installers have to come at another time. What if one of the team members cannot keep their scheduled time? What does the designer do?

They have to rearrange the whole schedule to keep all the parts of the design moving forward. There are so many phases of interior design that is is much more complicated than appearances reflect.

This particular company owner has a different slant on interior design. Through the years has traveled the world to identify products they would use in his interior designs. They have learned how products are made and where they are made. These products are mainly handcrafted with care and passion by artisans around the world. The owner believes strongly in using products and processes that are ethically followed and motivated.

The owner incorporates these types of handcrafted articles into their own personal designs and space planning projects. The company owner really does not favor a lot of today’s manufacturing processes that focus on mass production and major turnover of the products. There is no trace of handcrafted quality in these processes. The owner feels that the labor is not intensive enough and the quality is not incorporated into the processes.

The owner also believes the processes lack integrity and the manufacturers will cut corners to save money and not produce the kind of goods they could be producing. The company owner does not incorporate these types of mass-produced articles into their own personal designs. The company owner favors handcrafted items in all their own personal designs. Their philosophy is to design an interior that has fewer objects in its space.

The company owner believes that more is not necessarily beautiful but that less is beautiful and truly reflects the beauty of the space. Again, a beautifully interior designed room is not about scale and quantity but quality and smaller-sized objects properly set in the space. The company owner believes this type of design will accurately reflect the personal beauty and taste of the homeowner. The company owner designs interiors that reflect the inherent beauty of natural scenes. The designer uses handcrafted furniture upholstery, hard finishes to furniture, and textiles. The designer likes to create interior designs that look like natural habitats.

Interior Design What is it

A very technical definition of interior designing is the art and science of beautifying an interior space to make it as aesthetically pleasing as possible to the occupants who occupy and interact in that space. At the heart of   this process us the interior designer. Who as we mentioned earlier has to balance many tasks during the project to make it a reality.

A History of Interior Design

In the early days of the profession, the process of interior design was apart of the construction of the actual building and was done instinctively.  It is said that interior design became a deliberate profession as a result of the development of society and the architectural processes became more complex. Architectural designs of buildings have become more complex because of the technology becoming more complex.

The old methodology was to design everything without deliberate purpose but to just instinctively plan interior spaces as they seemed to evolve with the building of the outer complex. Overtime the profession has developed because people became more aware of utilizing space more efficiently, design functionality, and user well-being now compromise the modern interior design industry.

In ancient India the architects doubled as interior designers because of references to the Indian god named Vishwakarma-the god of architecture-one of the gods in ancient Indian mythology. Also, references to events and texts can be seen on sculptures found in 17th century palaces known as Havelis. In modern times the traditional homes have given away to modern dwellings but there are still 2000 Havelis in existence.

In ancient  Egypt  “soul houses” were put in the tombs of the dead and from these houses, interior designs can be seen. So interior designing may date back to thousands of years. The soul houses show interior designs of various dynasties throughout Egypt. You may be able to see interior design changes in porticos, ventilation, columns, loggias, windows, and doors.

In the 17th to the early 19th century interior designing was in its very rudimentary stages as the concern for interior designing was left to the homemaker to design the interior as she saw fit. Architects would also employ artisans to do the interior design works in homes and buildings.

Moving into the mid to late 19th century  the interior design industry took off as the industrial revolution changed the way people lived in their homes. All the technological innovations brought prosperity to the middle class as their wages rose and they became more skillful in their trades. The middle classes began to desire more elaborate interior designs to go with their new found wealth and status. The furniture makers expanded into the interior design business to meet and keep up with the new demand. The companies offered different styles of furnishings to fill every space in the home.

In 1914 these fledgling interior design entities gave away to “specialized” interior designers or individuals who were in many respects amateurs. So, their personal designs may have not been the most aesthetically-pleasing because they were unskilled and untrained in the interior design process. These pioneers paved the way for the modern 20th century interior designers.

Since the old days, interior design has become so much more sophisticated and complex from its early beginnings. Amazingly, interior designing may have been started thousands of years ago in Ancient India and Egypt.

Back in 1899, there was a British organization that had 200 interior decorators in England that made their living as professional interior decorators. Then by the beginning of the 20th century amateur publications and individuals began to challenge the monopoly the big companies had on the industry at the time. As we said before these individuals and smaller independent publications gave birth to the latter day interior designers.

On a personal level in America, Candace Wheeler became the first woman interior designer in America. She paved the way for women to become interior designers. She was instrumental in bringing about a new design element to America. She also helped to start design courses for women in cities all over the country. A major influence in the design industry was a pamphlet written by designer Edith Warton with architect Odgen Codman in America in 1897.
